Life Goes On

April 13, 2016 By Janine 15 Comments

So many changes is such a short time.

One leaves home

Since we last spoke, Hippie Child has moved out of home. Living two and a half hours away she’s studying art at University. I’ve managed to get her to make me her friend on Facebook, it’s the only way I can get to communicate with her, whenever I call she’s too busy to talk. You know having an independent life and all. It’s very hard to get used to not speaking to her every day.

I’m trying to give up my helicopter ways, I got a pyschologist on the radio show I produce to talk about dealing with your child leaving home. He suggested the fact I had her university schedule printed out on the fridge was heading into stalking territory. What would he know, he probably doesn’t even have kids.

The day of moving her into university was stressful, but I held it together. Although I was so busy being brave I forgot to take a single photo. Not one to commemorate this life changing event. Later she kindly sent me the only photo of the day she had taken. It was after the orientation meeting, when they were given a goody bag of useful bits ‘n’ pieces.

Yes she now has condoms and advice on what lube she should use. We’re not in Kansas any more Toto.

The youngest hits the road

Meanwhile Princess Child now has her learner’s permit. We are back to the white knuckle rides. So far we’ve completed two and half hours of the mandatory 120 hours. Not long to go then. On the positive we got to a main road with at least another two cars on it today, so that’s a big step forward.  You’ve got no idea how slow time goes when you are driving an endless loop of the same back roads and deliberately avoiding any sign of life.

I got a job

So for the first time in 21 years I have a permanent job. I went through the whole rigmarole of applying, selection criteria, panel interview over the phone. Surprisingly at the end of it all the job was mine. So now I’m officially doing the role I’ve done for 12 months (and for 3 years before that on a different program).

Security is now my future, unless they axe the radio program, or decide to cut staff or …. well let’s leave it there.

This old blog

Now I have the employment thing sorted I’m going to try to get the rest of my life on track. I’ve missed you guys at this blog. I’ve been planning a few things, there’s a podcast coming and I’m working on bringing back consistency to my posting. So bear with me it might be getting interesting (or at least a bit more frequent) around here.

How’s life with you guys?

Well hello lovely one! Congrats on the job! When I saw you last you’d just applied. What fantastic news and how clever are your employers for recognising you were the best for the role? Your story about D’s goodie bag brought back memories from my own O week – good to see nothing’s changed. I TOTALLY get that you have her timetable printed out. I’m adjusting to my eldest being away – and on the other side of the world – by regularly checking her iCal calendar updates on a shared calendar she set up with me eons ago. I wonder if she knows that I know exactly what time her groceries will be delivered and where her latest appointment is? Nothing wrong with that, is there?

Absolutely nothing wrong with it … I only said to Hippie Child the other day that we needed a shared calendar … they can run but they can’t hide!

I’m going to continue to believe that my mother doesn’t know the words condoms or lubricant. That said, yay for Hippie Child getting into art school. And that’s really cool about Princess Child – although I’m not sure what she’s holding in that picture. YAYY for the job. Congrats 🙂 and props to you for having the patience to jump through the rigmarole (just learned a new word).

Things over here are okay! Traveling for work again (Colorado this time) – pretty tired from all of that, but loving getting to see a new part of the country. Planning a blog conference in little ol’ Philadelphia – I have a great team helping, which has definitely been cool. The boyfriend and I have been together for a 15 months officially, 29 months unofficially (that’s a story for another day over wine, there’s definitely wine). And trying to plan a few trips to places to break up the monotony of doing audits at work. I’ve got to tell you, audits aren’t really my jam.
