Well this is an unusual scenario. I’m home alone. One child is off camping the other at a birthday party sleepover. I’ve just realised I haven’t had the house to myself since I went back to full-time work. I think I’ve forgotten what to do with myself. I did consider running around the house naked. The last time I did the run from my bedroom to clean washing basket in the laundry – bath towel flapping (I think the towels are getting smaller – they don’t seem to cover as much as they used to – don’t anyone mention it could be me getting bigger) it was accompanied by howls of protest from the teenagers. But it’s the middle of the day and we have no curtains so perhaps it would be draw complaints from the neighbours.
I wandered around like a lost puppy for a while, did some washing, went shopping, read the Sunday newspapers uninterrupted. I know mother’s of younger children will find it hard to believe but teenagers can be just as good as disturbing the peace as the toddlers.
“Mum we are out of bread”
“Mum I need to borrow the car”
“Mum I need money to put petrol in the car I’m borrowing”
“Mum the internet is going slow have you paid the bill?”
“Mum I can’t find my swimmers”
“Has anyone washed the beach towels? Why hasn’t anyone washed the beach towels?”
“Mum I can’t find my shoes, have you moved my shoes?”
“What’s for dinner?”
“Mum she’s wearing my top, tell her she has to ask before she borrows my stuff!”
“Can we go into town? I need to buy a present for my friend/buy a new school bag/buy an outfit to wear to such and such ….
Well you get the drift.
I manage to get in a bit of a binge tv watching. Blue Bloods Season One I never saw the early episodes.
I’m getting a sense that I may not be that productive in my empty nest years if today is anything to go by. But don’t worry the youngest has rung, she thinks she’s getting the flu so I can pick her up after they watch a movie, she’ll call when she’s ready. So now I sit and wait for until my taxi services are required.
What do you do when you get the house to yourself?
