I know there is a big day approaching. There are Christmas carols streaming through the PA at the shopping centre, I can’t for the life of me find a car park, and people are talking about presents, food and the heat.
In my usual state of chaotic disorder I am not acknowledging the big day. I can only handle one crisis at a time.
I’m currently dealing with my own post-traumatic stress disorder from the exam season. Thank God that’s over.
Now I am in the middle of Year 6 graduation preparations. We got the dress easily, tried on two, one was perfect (and on sale, double bonus). Bought within the space of 30 minutes and 12 weeks ahead of the event. See, already you can tell it was too simple.
We are without SHOES people. The graduation is THREE days away. I had a pair picked out that I loved (let’s not worry about what the child likes), went to buy them today, unfortunately they only had them in children’s sizes. Since the last growth spurt the Princess has acquired clod hoppers the same size as mine. WE CAN’T BUY FROM THE KIDS SECTION ANY MORE.
The Princess is keen to wear her sister’s army style boots with the white lace dress, we are currently in intense discussion. I am aware it’s the FASHION and happy for her to wear that to ANY OTHER EVENT, just not the Year 6 graduation. Don’t anyone dare leave comments about stifling a child’s individuality. She can be as individual as she likes once we’ve got through the church service, the sit-down dinner and the formal dancing.
I’ve made executive decisions today on the daisies for her hair, apparently there are different types of daisies, I’ve made a stab-in-the-dark at the type she wanted. Please let me have chosen the right ones. We’ve still got to get earrings, but I think we are on agreement on which ones.
We are going to this much trouble to get from primary to high school, imagine the state we are going to be in for the Year 12 formal! I may need to be sedated.
So once Graduation is completed perhaps I can think about this other big day.
I managed to condense all my Christmas parties into 12 hours yesterday. The office Christmas party was a three-hour cruise on the river, which I followed with a quick drink at a waterside bar before heading to another waterfront restaurant for a girls night out Christmas bash. I’m a little tired today, but that’s TWO ticks off the to-do list.
Unfortunately, the list remains lengthy.
I’ve been engaging in some magazine porn to try to create a menu for the event-of-the-year.
So far I’m liking Ginger Beer & Mustard Glazed Ham. How hard is it to cook a ham from scratch? I’ve never done it before.
These pavs look nice too, White Chocolate Mini Pavlovas with Summer Fruits.
What are your Christmas plans and are you on track for the festive season?
Diana Douglas says
I’m on track and ready! I’ve probably forgotten something, but I’ll enjoy the illusion until I remember whatever it is that I forgot.
Janine says
Way to go Diana, whatever you’ve forgotten was unnecessary anyway.

My in-laws have rented a house for the extended family – pool, spa, billiards room! Still haven’t got my head around menu options. Usually a spread of rare roast beef fillet, lots of prawns, cold turkey. I might make my Waldorf salad, and I make a killer basil hummus. Can’t wait to relax in that spa with some champers.
PS I’m with you on the boots/dress combo.
Janine says
The holiday house sounds like a great idea.

For the first time we are staying home, all day, no visitors and no outings. It will be strange! I’m keeping it simple, ever since our disaster at Easter, when I spent alot of time preparing a meal only to have 3/4 of the boys crying at the table over it.
You can never, ever, go wrong with pavs.
Janine says
Don’t you love when you go to so much work and it all turns into an emotion rollercoaster at the dinner table? Enjoy your day.
Grace says
Oh well done on getting through all those Christmas parties! I admire your stamina! But it has to be done, doesn’t it? As Woody Allen famously said, “80% of success is showing up” 🙂 x
Janine says
Yep, it’s a tough job but somebody has to do it.

the preparations for a year 6 farewell sounds stressful – hope all goes without a hitch!
Our Christmas preparations are done, so looking forward to a relaxed time hanging out with the family.
Janine says
So glad someone has it under control.
Mumabulous says
I’ve got two little girls who are already very decisive about what they want to wear. My three year old just loves pairing gum boots with tutus. I can’t be bothered arguing the point just now but for a graduation ceremony…
Janine says
Yes, save your energy for the big battles!

so, let me get this straight, after year 6 graduation, the children have a summer break? maybe january and february off school? we are deep in winter, have a couple of weeks off for christmas, and then start school jan 3. our graduations and changes of grade level happen after summer break, which is from june to mid-august. good luck with your list!
Janine says
Yep, they finish up school this week and then don’t go back until 30/31 January. Year 6 is the end of Primary school (probably your elementary??) and in our case that means a change of schools as the primary and high school are on separate campuses.
