45 Years – This Is What’s Been Happening.

November 21, 2012 By Janine 14 Comments

Cars without seatbelts.
One last man hanged.
Postcodes introduced.
Aboriginal people got the vote (for real).

A Prime Minister drowned.
A peacemaker was murdered.
The Beatles crooned.

A heart transplanted.
Man walked on the moon.
A test-tube baby was born.
A sheep cloned.

They sang at Woodford.
While Watergate signalled a President’s demise.
Equal pay for women was legislated.
An Opera House opened.

Darwin flattened.
Brisbane flooded.
Victoria burned.

A Governor General sacked the Government.
A train ran off the tracks.
The boats arrived from Vietnam.
Skylab crashed to earth.

The ghost train caught fire.
A dingo took a baby.

TV turned colour.
Phones went cordless, then mobile.
A bloke in the UK connected the world.
An ageing rocker gathered his mates to sing for Africa.
We cried as Towers fell.
We fought wars we couldn’t win.

Computers started big, grew small, and moved from office to home.
A marketing genius convinced us we needed one in our pocket.
LP’s, cassettes, CD’s, MP3s, iPods.
Money started appearing out of the wall.

Credit became the norm.
Eftpos, Email, SMS.
The World Book grew dusty on the shelf.
Wikipedia answered our questions.
Film went the way of the dodo, digital became the go.

A hotel was bombed.
The greenies saved the Franklin.
The Middle East was in crisis.
We worried about being “nuked”.

Sports were played. Medals won.
Bradbury still standing at the end when all had fallen.
Gould, The Mean Machine, Perkins, Thorpe and Lewis in the pool.
Freeman takes the gold and proudly carries two flags.

A shy mother won Wimbledon.
Newcombe, Laver it was a tennis heyday.
Cash climbed the stands when he took the title.
Rafter should have won, but didn’t.
Hewitt c’mon to victory.
We beat the Yanks at the Cup,
and Hawkie gave us the day off.

Microwaves, dishwashers, clothes dryers.

Star Wars, Grease, Saturday Night Fever.
Elvis left the building.
Skyhooks, Abba, Duran Duran, Boy George.
A music maker shot on the street.
The Bradys, the Ingalls, The Waltons and The Sullivans
were the families we watched.
Sunday night was Disney on the tele,
or Countdown if you were cool.
Scott married Charlene.
Molly left us.

Challenge exploded.
Chernobyl melted down.
The Berlin Wall crumbled.

A fairy tale princess died.
A sole survivor at Thredbo.

We hosted the best Olympics ever,
and a Danish Prince picked up an Aussie girl at the pub.

Terrorism came to Bali.
A tsunami hit.

Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple.

A Prime Minister said sorry.

The boats still come from war-torn places.
Women Prime Ministers, Governor Generals and Premiers.
A black man leads the US

It’s been a busy, busy world this last 45 years.

What moments stand out for you?

For some of those years I wasn’t around, for most I was in England, so a couple of the references were lost on me, but most of them I knew. My sister was wildly obsessed with Scott, Charlene, kylie and Jason, so we watched them get married over and over on VHS. And then we watched the music video “especially for you” analysing every moment in case we could see trace of a real love affair. The post made me smile and think 🙂

I’m impressed you identified so many when you weren’t living here, but of course Scott and Charlene – they were global!

Wow there are so many significant moments there. Funny how sometimes those ‘moments’ are on a huge scale and sometimes it really is the little things that matter. I’m pleased I was around (and an adult with access to a TV) to see a Prime Minister say sorry. Lovely post.

It was funny putting it together how many things actually repeated over the years, flooding, wars, sacking prime ministers. Yes there were big historical moments that came to mind, but lots of “smaller” pop culture ones too.

I know, there was a section there where I was just adding disaster after disaster, got a bit depressing so I threw in Abba, Disney and Neighbours to lighten the mood.

Wow! What a great look back to 45 years! What moment stands out for me ? Lots. Including the passing of Michael Jackson. Listening to the news on the radio on the way to work that day was almost surreal.
    Happy Birthday! 🙂

Didn’t think of Michael Jackson, funny you were listening to a radio show for the news, I was producing one when it came through that he had died, I remember trying to find Glenn A Baker for an interview on Jackson’s contribution to the world of music.
