We have survived our nine hour journey and are now reverting back to beanies, scarves and gloves in the still-winter weather at the bottom of the Snowy Mountains.
The car ride was uneventful. The highlight being my serenading the family through a collection of my favorite hits.
The you-beaut techno gadget which was supposed to play the iPods through the car stereo didn’t work. Luckily, at the last minute I had swept up all our old CD’s to bring along, given the car now has the only CD player we own.
First I unearthed the soundtrack to Four Weddings and a Funeral. My performance was particularly strong during Love is All Around and, as usual, I got all misty eyed at John Hannah reciting Auden’s After the Funeral. At which point I informed the family in addition to my eulogy (which I’ve already written) I wanted John Hannah flown out to recite this at my final farewell.
“oh god” they mumbled from the back seat “she’s still on about this funeral, anyone would think she WAS dying”.
“If she keeps up this singing the funeral might be sooner rather than later” muttered the husband, “if you can’t sing in tune could you at least keep in time”.
“nah” I replied as I launched into Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy especially for Kim and Rachel (see comments on eulogy post).
After getting through Midler’s greatest hits I rounded off with Elton
John’s Love Songs and a powerful rendition of Candle In The Wind.
By this point the family had lost the will to live and seized control of the CD’s barring me from making any further noise for the rest of the trip.
What do you like to sing on a road trip?
Ps, no phone or Internet coverage where I am, wait till you hear what I have to go through to get a blog post up, that will be tomorrow’s tale. So excuse mistakes in post, and apologies for not replying to comments will do so once I return to the 21st Century.

Oh I love that scene in Four Weddings and a Funeral Too – John Hannah is heartbreaking. I was so thrilled to learn he wasn’t gay in real life because I intended to be the fifth wedding in the sequel – but in real life – to that gorgeous man. (I married a different gorgeous man instead, so all good, as they say.) I think anything by The Carpenters is a lot of fun to sing, loudly, with not a lot of respect for key. “DON’T YOU REMEMBER YOU TOLD ME YOU LOVED ME BAY-BEE…..!!!”
