Yes, Nirvana–or, more accurately, Kurt Cobain–had Gen Xers figured out. He was an Xer himself. Then he killed himself. And compared to 99% of other Xers, he had a great career and lots of money. If he couldn’t hack it, the rest of us are up the creek.

I spent 9 years in universities accumulating degrees. My last two paying jobs consisted of washing floors and manning the phone in an inbound call center. I’m now certain that Cobain was leading by example.

I’m gen-x, not a boomer, not y, X. I remember the first time I saw this commercial back in the 90’s. My boomer parent’s didn’t get it, but Volkswagen sure got us… It was around the time that “Reality Bites” came out and Nirvana was popular. I remember feeling like someone understood me and my generation. We Xers exist, no matter what this dude says.

Thanks Lara, if we do have a shared sense of experience that’s got to be a starting point to being a “real” stand alone generation surely?

I can identify with so many things you list as characteristics of Gen X. Surely that instant recognition/identification, and sense of shared experience, confirms that we are a distinct group (though obviously not homogenous). I think your points about adapting to new technologies are the most defining factors. Great post, thanks.
