Thanks Allison. I think modern feminism needs to look at WHY women’s careers are the ones that get sacrificed. I think it is a complex mass of reasons ranging from economic, logistical, practical, emotional and societal.

Yes choice is an important part of feminism. I also think you are right about “having it all” and I sincerely hope that we can achieve it over a lifetime!

Yes I think Feminism does have some branding issues and I get Moran’s desire to have women reclaim the word feminism. I just think that a lot of time is wasted on who is/isn’t a feminist and real issues get overlooked in the process. I also think it is really important to look at the last twenty or so years with a discerning eye and perhaps consider we may need to look at a different approach to continue moving forward.

I agree the debate does get tiresome. I guess I feel my generation has been a big of a “guinea pig” for modern day feminism, and I think in order to ensure our daughters have an easier time than we did, we do have to discuss what worked and what didn’t.

So many questions that have no answers and confront women every day. The reality of life versus the rhetoric. but yes, I am a feminist. I believe women should be able live life on their own terms, whatever those may be. And it drives me CRAZY that men get to continue in fulfilling careers while women’s careers are somehow less important and easily sacrificed.

I am Gen X too, 45, single and I live alone – all factors which I am stunned at how regularly I have to ‘defend’ (not the Gen X part so much, except when it comes to Duran Duran or Talking Heads). For me, the F word is about choice and respecting the choices others make.
But I do think that ‘having it all’ is perhaps propaganda rather than reality – in that it seems pretty tough to have ‘it all’ whatever the hell that is, at once. Over a lifetime, maybe, I hope so…
So glad I found this post via Rewind!

I have never identified with the feminist movement. The way I see it is that individually we need to move forward with our beliefs whatever they may be and stand up for what we believe in. I don’t need a label to define me. But each to their own!

I am feminist, and proud. I like Caitlin Moran’s take in How To Be A Woman: ‘We need to reclaim the word ‘feminism’. We need the word ‘feminism’ back real bad. When statistics come in saying that only 29% of American women would describe themselves as feminist – and only 42% of British women – I used to think, What do you think feminism IS, ladies? What part of ‘liberation for women’ is not for you? Is it freedom to vote? The right not to be owned by the man you marry? The campaign for equal pay? ‘Vogue’ by Madonna? Jeans? Did all that good shit GET ON YOUR NERVES? Or were you just DRUNK AT THE TIME OF THE SURVEY?”
Interesting post. x

Feminism was not a choice with me. Sometimes you have to put down the labels and do what you have to do. If I’d had my druthers back then, I’d have loved the luxury of having been a stay-at-home Mom. I was lucky enough to work for a company that recognized that family came first.
